Lagos Airport Terminal 2 fire caused a brief disruption at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Sunday after smoke appeared inside the facility.
Passengers were kept outside Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Sunday after smoke filled part of the facility.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) first described the incident as a fire and said its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service had responded.
Less than two hours later, FAAN issued a fresh statement and said there was no fire at the terminal.
According to the authority, the smoke came from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. Investigators are now examining what triggered the system.
Videos shared online showed passengers standing outside the terminal as firefighters responded to the incident.
Meanwhile, the disruption affected activities at the airport for a short period before operations returned to normal.
FAAN Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, issued the clarification through the authority’s official X account.
FAAN said its investigation would establish why the fire suppression system activated.
The authority thanked passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their cooperation during the incident.
Normal operations have resumed at Terminal 2 as the investigation continues.
