The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has proposed ₦200 annual dues for students, with the payment potentially linked to mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
NANS President Akinteye Babatunde said the association wants students to pay the annual dues directly instead of relying on Student Union Governments (SUGs) and institutions to collect the money.
Babatunde said NANS plans to work with the NYSC on the proposal. Under the plan, students could present proof of payment before they proceed to NYSC camp.
“We are proposing that students pay ₦200 annually to NANS directly,” Babatunde said.
He said NANS faces funding problems because many SUGs no longer remit dues to the association.
According to Babatunde, NANS receives complaints from students across tertiary institutions but lacks enough funds to respond to some of the issues.
However, the ₦200 NANS dues are not listed among the NYSC’s current mobilisation requirements.
The NYSC requires institutions to submit approved lists of eligible graduates and sets other conditions for locally trained graduates registering for mobilisation.
NANS has not announced the payment platform, collection date or procedure for issuing receipts under the proposal.
Students preparing for NYSC therefore do not have to pay the proposed ₦200 dues as part of the current NYSC registration process.
The position could change if NANS and the NYSC agree to link proof of payment with mobilisation.
For now, the ₦200 annual dues remain a NANS proposal and do not form part of the NYSC’s published mobilisation requirements.
