The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Board of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) after more than five years without a board.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, inaugurated the board in Abuja and tasked members with improving the regulation and delivery of technical education across Nigeria.
Alausa urged the board to focus on strengthening polytechnics and other technical institutions while ensuring graduates receive skills that meet workplace demands.
He said the government wants technical education programmes to produce graduates with practical abilities that employers require.
The minister also directed the board to support competency-based training and improve collaboration between technical institutions and industries.
Professor Babatunde Salako chairs the new NBTE Governing Board after President Bola Tinubu appointed him to lead the agency in April 2026.
Speaking at the event, NBTE Executive Secretary, Professor Idris Bugaje, described the inauguration as an important step for the agency after years without a governing board.
NBTE regulates technical education standards, accreditation and programme approval for polytechnics, monotechnics and other technical institutions in Nigeria.
The board will oversee policy decisions affecting technical education institutions and guide the agency’s activities under the Federal Government’s education plans.
The inauguration comes as Nigeria continues to expand technical and vocational education programmes focused on skills training and workforce development.
