Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a surprise congratulatory visit to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke in Ede on Sunday after Adeleke won the August 15 governorship election.

Obasanjo visited Adeleke at his country home after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the incumbent the winner. During the visit, the former president congratulated Adeleke, prayed for him and urged him to continue serving the people of Osun State.

“Continue to deliver good governance. Continue to meet the needs of your people,” Obasanjo told Adeleke.

Obasanjo arrived with his associate, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, while Adeleke received him alongside his deputy, Kola Adewusi.

Adeleke welcomed Obasanjo and thanked him for making the trip to celebrate his victory.

“Baba, I thank you for this surprise visit. I promise never to disappoint God, the Osun people and all lovers of democracy who made our victory possible,” Adeleke said.

The governor also promised to remain committed to serving the people of Osun State during his second term.

Adeleke won the election with 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who secured 444,815 votes. African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam came third with 17,180 votes.

Adeleke defeated Oyebamiji by 66,252 votes after winning 19 local government areas, while the APC won 11.

The visit came after Adeleke secured another four-year term in office. The governor first won the Osun governorship election in 2022 before securing re-election in 2026.

Obasanjo’s visit also featured a brief celebration, with the former president and Adeleke seen dancing during the meeting.
