The $100,000 reward promised to each Super Falcons player by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is back in focus ahead of Nigeria’s WAFCON clash with Egypt.
National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko said on July 26 that the Federal Government had paid the money into the players’ bank accounts. He also said officials would hand over the houses promised to the squad.
“I am leaving Glasgow for Morocco this week to present keys to the houses, which His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, promised the Super Falcons after they won the last edition of the WAFCON,” Dikko said.
“Even their $100,000 has been paid into their various bank accounts.”
Tinubu announced the reward after Nigeria beat Morocco 3-2 in the WAFCON final. Each player was promised $100,000 and a house at the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja, while coaches and backroom staff were promised $50,000 and houses.
However, The Guardian reported on August 5 that some players were still asking when they would receive the money. An official who spoke on behalf of some players said the NFF had repeatedly told the team that the payment would reach their accounts.
“The other day the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials told us that the money will hit our accounts soon, but that is what we have been told since last December,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Nigeria will face Egypt in its final Group C match after losing 3-0 to Malawi and beating Zambia 1-0.
The Super Falcons will play without Tosin Demehin and Jennifer Echegini. Demehin received a red card against Zambia, while Echegini collected two yellow cards in Nigeria’s first two matches.
Nigeria need a win against Egypt to reach the quarter-finals.
