Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born on 15 September 1977 in Enugu, Nigeria, and her original English name was Grace. She is the fifth of six kids in an Igbo family. She grew up living on the University of Nigeria campus in a house that used to belong to the writer Chinua Achebe.
Her parents were both very educated and had studied in the United States before coming back to Nigeria. Her dad became a professor at the University of Nigeria, and her mum later became the first woman to be the university’s registrar.
Childhood Reading and the Biafran War Influence

After that, she was a fellow at Princeton University and later earned another master’s in African studies from Yale University in 2008. That same year, she won a MacArthur Fellowship, which is a huge award.
Breakthrough Novel: Purple Hibiscus
While studying in the US, she wrote her first novel, Purple Hibiscus, but publishers kept rejecting it or asking her to change the setting to America.

After that, she spent four years writing her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, which is about the Biafran War and uses her father’s memories.

In 2012, she gave another famous TED Talk called “We Should All Be Feminists”, and part of it was later used by Beyoncé in a song and even printed on a Dior T-shirt. In 2013, her third novel, Americanah, was published and became a major hit.

In 2015, she was involved in lots of events, including giving speeches and helping run the PEN World Voices Festival.
She also wrote a Facebook post in 2016 about feminism, which became her 2017 book Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions.
Between 2017 and 2019, she gave many big speeches at universities and festivals, and she became known worldwide for her views on feminism, culture, and identity.

In 2020, she published a short story called “Zikora” and wrote an essay called Notes on Grief after her father died. She turned that essay into a book in 2021. She also made a children’s version of We Should All Be Feminists in 2020.
Chimamanda Adichie wrote her first children’s book, Mama’s Sleeping Scarf, in 2019, and it came out in 2023 under the name Nwa Grace James.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie married a Nigerian doctor named Ivara Esege in 2009. He is a medical doctor who has supported her personal and family life while she focuses on her writing and public work.
The couple has three children together. Their first child is a daughter born in 2016. In April 2024, they welcomed twin boys via surrogacy, a fact Chimamanda shared publicly later to protect their privacy.
Tragically, one of the twin boys, Nkanu Nnamdi, died in January 2026 at 21 months old after a brief illness, and the family asked for privacy as they mourned their loss.
