Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has demanded the immediate release of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Sunday Bisi after security operatives reportedly arrested him in Ilesa on Saturday.
Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said operatives arrested Bisi at his residence shortly after he returned from voting in the Osun governorship election. The operatives then took him to an undisclosed location.
Adeleke called the incident “barbaric” and “a vicious attack on free will”.
“Information reaching me indicates that Hon. Bisi was accosted in his home in Ilesa shortly after he returned after voting, and whisked him away to yet to be known location,” Adeleke said.
The governor alleged that security operatives targeted his supporters to limit their access to result collation centres.
“This latest sweep on my supporters, I have authoritatively learnt, is part of a broader plan to give the opposition unhindered access to change results at collation centres and upturn our wins at the poll,” he said.
Adeleke also called the incident “the biggest assault on democracy” and demanded the release of other people he described as political prisoners.
“In that regard, I am calling for the immediate release of Hon. Bisi because his arrest is nothing but political and other political prisoners across Osun state,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, alleged that police officers arrested Bisi around 2pm.
Davido said the police entered Bisi’s residence and accused him of moving around on election day.
“Just in! Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi has been arrested in his Ilesa Residence around 2pm by the Police. Police invaded his house accusing him of moving around on the day of election. The same agency that ignored APC thugs harassing voters. It is well.”
The Osun governorship election took place across the state on Saturday, with voters casting ballots at polling units.
