Lawyer and Political Career

Wike worked briefly in private legal practice after completing his legal training before entering politics. His political career began in elective office in 1999, when he became Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.

He served as chairman for two terms between 1999 and 2007 and also held positions within the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). He served as Deputy President in 2004 and later became ALGON President.

In 2007, Wike became Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi. He held the position until 2011 before President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Minister of State for Education in July 2011.

Wike later became Supervising Minister of Education in 2013 and remained in the federal cabinet until 2014, when he left to pursue the Rivers State governorship.

Wike won the PDP governorship primary in 2014 and contested the 2015 Rivers State governorship election. He defeated APC candidate Dakuku Peterside and became Governor of Rivers State on 29 May 2015, with Ipalibo Banigo as his deputy.

He won re-election in 2019 and completed his second term on 29 May 2023. Siminalayi Fubara succeeded him as governor.

Nyesom Wike 2022 Presidential Ambition and G5 Governors

Wike sought the PDP presidential ticket ahead of the 2023 general election and contested the partyโ€™s presidential primary in May 2022. He finished second behind Atiku Abubakar.

After the primary, Wike became the most prominent member of the PDP G5 Governors, alongside Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.

The five governors demanded changes within the PDP leadership and called for Iyorchia Ayu to vacate his position as PDP national chairman. The group later became known as the Integrity Group.

Nyesom Wike and Bola Tinubu

Wikeโ€™s political relationship with Bola Ahmed Tinubu became more prominent after the 2023 presidential election.

Although Wike remained associated with the PDP, President Tinubu appointed him to the federal cabinet as FCT Minister. Wike said in August 2023 that he had obtained approval from PDP leaders before accepting Tinubuโ€™s ministerial appointment.

The appointment placed a PDP politician in an administration led by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nyesom Wike as FCT Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Nyesom Wike Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in August 2023. Wike assumed office on 21 August 2023 after completing his second term as Governor of Rivers State.

As FCT Minister, Wike oversees the administration and development of the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja roads, infrastructure, urban planning and satellite-town projects.
