President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been petitioned before the European Commission over allegations involving his academic credentials and eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Kalu Kalu, a lawyer and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), submitted the petition in Brussels on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Kalu accused Tinubu of submitting allegedly forged academic certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 election.
He also questioned the information provided about Tinubu’s primary and secondary education and linked the issue to the constitutional requirements for presidential candidates.
Kalu cited Section 137 of the 1999 Constitution and argued that a candidate who submits a false certificate to INEC cannot contest an election.
“Section 137 clearly says that if you present a false certificate to INEC, you are not qualified to run.”
Kalu also asked European authorities to examine the allegations and consider them in their dealings with the Nigerian government.
The petition further referred to a 1993 US federal court forfeiture involving $460,000 connected to narcotics proceeds in Chicago, according to 247UReports.
Kalu urged the European Union, European Parliament and other international institutions to examine the issues raised in his petition.
Meanwhile, the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected previous allegations concerning Tinubu’s academic records.
Government officials and APC representatives have described the allegations as political claims, while Tinubu’s supporters have maintained that his Chicago State University records were addressed during previous legal proceedings.
The latest petition comes as political groups prepare for the 2027 presidential election.
However, the petition contains allegations made by Kalu and does not establish that Tinubu forged any certificate.
The European Commission had not issued a response to the petition in the reports published on Friday.
