Opposition parties have resumed talks on a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election, with ADC, PDP, NDC, SDP and other parties set to meet in Abuja.
First Nigerian learnt the G100 held separate meetings with leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
Following the meetings, the group fixed August 18 for a Summit of Opposition Parties in Abuja.
The talks follow an April meeting in Ibadan where opposition parties agreed to work towards a joint candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Since then, disagreements have emerged over who should get the presidential ticket and which region should produce the candidate.
The NDC has backed a southern presidential candidate who would serve one term, while former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s camp has rejected the proposal.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed also rejected the idea of a single opposition candidate, describing it as “a lie” in an interview with Channels Television.
Despite the disagreements, the G100 said its meetings with the parties were “frank, constructive and encouraging”.
The group said the parties recognised the need for “sacrifice, compromise” and accommodation if they want to work together.
The August 18 summit will bring the parties together for further talks on cooperation and the 2027 presidential election.
