The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark Eid ul Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the holiday on Friday in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and around the world ahead of the celebration and urged them to reflect on the values associated with Prophet Muhammad’s life and teachings.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.”
The minister said Nigerians from all religious backgrounds could reflect on those values during the celebration.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
He also urged Nigerians to pray for peace and national cohesion during the Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
Tunji-Ojo said Nigerians share a responsibility to preserve national unity and promote peaceful coexistence.
He further called on Muslims to celebrate with restraint and mutual respect.
The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across the country.
The holiday will apply nationwide on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
