Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s latest criticism, defending his decision to oppose the former president’s third-term bid as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 election.
First Nigerian reports that Atiku’s response centres on the constitutional dispute that damaged his relationship with Obasanjo during their time in government.
According to The Guardian, Atiku issued the statement through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu. He said he opposed the third-term agenda because he believed Obasanjo’s attempt to extend his presidency went against Nigeria’s Constitution.
Why Atiku Opposed Obasanjo’s Third-Term Bid
Atiku said he has no apology for resisting the third-term plan and maintained that the Constitution must guide political leaders.
The former vice president also recalled his support for Obasanjo before and after the former military leader became president. He said he supported Obasanjo during his imprisonment, assisted his family and helped him return to political life after his release.
Atiku said he offered that support without expecting anything in return and does not regret helping his former political ally.
He also defended his contribution to the economic team that served under Obasanjo, pointing to praise for members of the administration from former World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Atiku And Obasanjo Dispute Returns Ahead Of 2027
The disagreement resurfaced after Obasanjo made fresh claims about events during their time in government.
Obasanjo alleged that Atiku gave former House of Representatives Speaker Ghali Umar Na’Abba N5 million to begin impeachment proceedings against him. Atiku rejected the allegation and connected the dispute to their disagreement over the third-term plan.
Meanwhile, Atiku said Nigerians should focus on security, economic recovery and unemployment during the 2027 election campaign.
He said political leaders should address current national problems instead of concentrating on old disagreements.
