President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that each D’Tigress player received the naira equivalent of $100,000 after Nigeria won the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket. The Federal Government also paid the equivalent of $50,000 to each official, according to the President.
The team’s package also included three-bedroom homes in Abuja and national honours for the players and officials. The Federal Government completed the housing and honours components before releasing the final cash payments.
Tinubu said the government followed the legal processes required to release the money. “That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept,” he said.
D’Tigress beat Mali 78-64 in the 2025 AfroBasket final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The victory secured Nigeria’s fifth consecutive title and seventh championship in the competition.
Meanwhile, Tinubu said the Federal Government was concluding the outstanding cash payments for the Super Falcons after their 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph. He said the players and officials already held the documents for their Abuja house allocations and their National Honours certificates.
The Super Falcons defeated Morocco 3-2 in the final in Rabat to claim Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title. The victory came after Nigeria had reached the tournament’s final for the first time since 2018.
The Super Eagles finished with the silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where hosts Côte d’Ivoire beat Nigeria 2-1 in the final. Tinubu said the government had since fulfilled the housing and national honours commitments made to the players.
The Federal Government also allocated plots of land in Abuja to members of the Super Eagles covered by the presidential pledge. Officials handed the team title documents and national honours certificates in December 2025.
Tinubu said the D’Tigress payment marked the completion of the government’s commitments to the team. “For the first time, a Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year,” he said.
Tinubu also said Nigerian athletes should expect the government to honour its commitments after major victories. “Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word,” he said, adding, “My promise to every Nigerian Athelete is make NIGERIA proud and come back to a grateful Nation.”
