Arne Slot has explained what happened during talks over the Netherlands job after reports claimed that salary and contract terms caused him to pull out.
The former Liverpool manager confirmed that he spoke with the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) about replacing Ronald Koeman. However, Slot said the discussions ended before they reached negotiations over money or the length of a contract.
“Those reports are incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks,” Slot said.
Instead, Slot said he decided against taking the Netherlands job because he wants to work with players every day in club football.
“At this stage of my career, I prefer to be on the training pitch with my players every day,” he said.
Slot therefore ended the Netherlands discussions after considering what the role would involve. The 47-year-old has remained without a club since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season.
Meanwhile, Slot has indicated that he wants his next job to come in club football. He said the club game still has plenty to offer him, while he did not rule out taking charge of the Netherlands at another point in his career.
The clarification also ends the speculation that financial demands prevented Slot from taking the Netherlands job. He said the talks never reached that point.
Slot’s decision leaves the Netherlands searching for a successor to Koeman, while the former Liverpool manager waits for his next club opportunity.
