The Super Falcons face South Africa on Thursday with their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup hopes at stake after Nigeria lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals.
Nigeria missed the chance to secure a World Cup place through the WAFCON semi-finals, but the Super Falcons still have another route. They must beat South Africa to continue their qualification campaign.
The Nigeria-South Africa clash will take place on Thursday, August 13, with both teams looking to recover from their quarter-final exits. Nigeria will need to put the Cameroon defeat behind them quickly as South Africa stand between the Super Falcons and the next stage of the qualification process.
Christy Ucheibe admitted that Nigeria’s quarter-final defeat was difficult for the squad.
“There is no excuse. We are very disappointed because we wanted to go further and qualify automatically for the World Cup.”
However, Ucheibe said the team still have the World Cup as their target and will fight for another opportunity.
Asisat Oshoala has also called on Nigerians to support the Super Falcons before the South Africa match. The Barcelona forward wants the team to secure the result needed to continue their World Cup campaign.
Coach Justin Madugu has also promised that Nigeria will give everything against South Africa. Madugu and Oshoala both said the Super Falcons do not want to follow the Super Eagles out of World Cup contention.
The Super Falcons now face South Africa knowing that victory would keep their 2027 Women’s World Cup qualification campaign alive.
