Nathaniel Bassey was born on 27 August 1981 in Lagos. Even though he was born in Lagos, his family is originally from Ikot Ofon Ikono, Uyo local government area, Akwa Ibom State. Nathaniel is a famous gospel musician (he makes Christian music). He also works as a pastor, plays the trumpet, and writes songs.

He is known for blending worship, gospel, jazz and classic hymns, a style that has made him one of the most influential gospel ministers in Nigeria and across Africa. Popular songs like Imela, Onise Iyanu and Olowogbogboro helped establish his wide following.

Alongside his music career, he serves as a pastor with The Redeemed Christian Church of God and leads The Oasis Lagos, the youth church of RCCG Kings Court in Victoria Island.

Background and Education

Nathaniel Bassey was born into a Christian home. His father is Mr E. Joshua Bassey, who served as a minister in The Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly. His mother, Mrs E. Bassey, is a devout Christian; less is known about her role or work. Nathaniel grew up with one brother and one sister.

First, he went to primary school at Apostolic Church Primary School in Surulere, Lagos. Then, for secondary school, he went to Federal Government College in Lagos.

After he finished secondary school, he went to the University of Lagos (UNILAG). There, he studied international relations and politics.

Then he moved to London. There, he continued studying politics and international relations at the University of London.

But he didn’t stop there. Because he really loved music, he also went to a special summer school in the UK called Middlesex University Summer School. There, he took music classes where he learned music theory (how music works) and music business (how the music industry works).

Wife & Children

Nathaniel Bassey is married to Sarah Bassey (sometimes referred to as Pastor Sarah Bassey) because she helps in ministry too. They got married on 13 April 2013, and they had known each other for many years before that.

Sarah comes from Eket in Akwa Ibom State, which is the same place Nathaniel is from, so they’re basically from the same home state. She’s known for supporting her husband’s music and ministry.

They have two children: a boy and a girl. Their son’s name is David Bassey. Their daughter’s name has not been shared in public, so most people don’t know it. The family lives in Lagos, Nigeria.

Music career

Nathaniel Bassey started learning music in church. He picked up the trumpet and practised singing while worshipping. Then, before he became famous in gospel music, he joined a respected jazz group in Lagos called the Steve Rhodes Orchestra. That was a huge deal because they were one of the best jazz bands in Nigeria. He played trumpet for them like a professional for a couple of years.

Even though he loved jazz, he felt something inside him telling him to use his music for worship and Christian ministry. So he decided to switch fully to gospel music. The really special thing about his style is that he mixes jazz with worship songs and hymns. And he uses the trumpet in gospel worship, which is not something most people do. That blend is what made his sound unique.

His first big break came with his debut album, Elohim, in 2008. He recorded it in Cape Town, South Africa. The songs were deep and spiritual. They also sounded really musical. That album helped him reach a much bigger audience.

Then came the song that changed everything, Imela (Thank You) in 2012. It featured Enitan Adaba, and it became a global worship hit fast. Churches all over the world started singing it. The song also got millions of views online. After that, songs like Onise Iyanu and Olowogbogboro became really popular too. People sang them in Christian gatherings everywhere.

He has released many albums over the years, and they show how his music grew from jazz-influenced worship into internationally recognised gospel worship. Some of his albums include:

  • Someone’s at the Door (2010)
  • The Son of God (& Imela) (2014)
  • This God is Too Good (2016)
  • Revival Flames (2017)
  • Jesus: The Resurrection & the Life (2018)
  • The King is Coming (2019)

The Hallelujah Challenge

One of his biggest contributions is the Hallelujah Challenge. It started in June 2017. It’s a huge online worship party. He invites people to join him at midnight for praise and prayer on live social media. In just a few weeks, hundreds of thousands of people joined. Now it happens every year. It has become a worldwide worship movement.

Besides making music, Nathaniel Bassey is also a pastor. He leads The Oasis, which is the youth church of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Lagos. He travels to speak, lead worship, and teach young musicians and worship leaders. He runs workshops that focus on both spiritual depth and musical skill, teaching people to be strong in character and excellent in their craft.

His music is used in worship events in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He’s also worked with many international gospel artists and performed at major Christian gatherings.

Nathaniel Bassey Net Worth

Nathaniel Bassey is worth around $800,000 to $950,000. He makes money from selling music and streaming. Live concerts and performances also bring in a lot. His ministry work earns him money too, like worship leadership and speaking events.

He also runs workshops that pay. Digital revenue from online platforms adds to his income. Sometimes he also gets money from brand partnerships. All of this together makes up his total net worth.

Cars And Houses

Nathaniel Bassey is not known for driving fancy or expensive cars. He is described as being more focused on music and ministry than on luxury. So, he owns a Toyota Prado, a Lexus SUV and a Mercedes-Benz. He seems to drive comfortable, modest cars rather than a luxury collection.

He owns an expensive Lagos house in Nigeria, where he lives with his family, and some videos from his Hallelujah Challenge show parts of it. There are also rumours of property abroad, like in the UK. He also has a multi-storey building used for his Hallelujah Challenge programme.
