Hope Odidika Uzodinma was born on 12 December 1958 in Omuma, Imo State, Nigeria. He comes from an Igbo Catholic family.

His father, Chief Michael Uzodinma, was the Igwe of Ozuh Omuma, and his mother is Ezinne Rose Uzodinma (née Nneoha).

He is related to the Okoro family of Etiti-Omuma and holds a traditional title, Onwa-Netiri Oha of Omuma Kingdom in Oru East Local Government Area.

Uzodinma has been married twice. His first marriage was to Augusta Uzodinma, with whom he had five children. This marriage ended in 2010.

In 2015, he married Chioma Ikeaka Uzodinma, and they have four children together. In total, he has nine children and is now a grandfather through his first two daughters.

Education

Uzodinma went to Mgbidi Secondary School in Omuma, Oru West, Imo State, where he finished his secondary education. In 1978, he went to Washington University in St. Louis, USA, and earned a bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy in 1982. Before that, he had completed an advanced diploma in transport studies.

He later earned a Master’s degree in Human Relations at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, a Higher Diploma in Maritime Management Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and a degree in Political Science from the University of London.

Uzodinma has maintained ties to academia, delivering the 52nd Convocation Lecture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in May 2024. Later that year, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, conferred on him an Honorary Doctorate in Management (Honoris Causa) at its 36th Convocation, recognising his contributions to national development and support for the university.

Early Career

Before going fully into politics, Uzodinma was a businessman. He was the CEO of Transurb Technical Consult Ltd., a company that offered consultancy and technical management services.

Political Career

Early Political Work

Uzodinma started in politics in 1983 when he joined the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and became the Imo State Youth Leader. In the 1990s, during the failed move to the Third Nigerian Republic, he was active in the United Nigeria Congress Party.

People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

Following Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Uzodinma joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Between 1999 and 2017, he served in multiple capacities, including membership of the National Caucus, National Executive Committee, and the PDP Board of Trustees.

Initially a close associate of Governor Achike Udenwa, Uzodinma left the PDP in late 2002 to join the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and contested the 2003 Imo State gubernatorial election, losing to Udenwa. He returned to the PDP in 2004 and later contested the 2006 PDP governorship primaries, finishing second to Senator Ifeanyi Araraume.

In 2011, Uzodinma endorsed incumbent Governor Ikedi Ohakim for re-election. In January 2011, he won the PDP senatorial primary for Imo West, defeating incumbent Senator Osita Izunaso with 2,147 votes to Izunaso’s 891.

Initially, he was disqualified by the Federal High Court for not being cleared by the PDP electoral panel, but he continued campaigning due to a Court of Appeal stay. On 5 April 2011, the Court of Appeal upheld his disqualification, but the Supreme Court overturned the earlier rulings in May 2011, declaring him the valid candidate.

Senate Career (2011–2019)

Uzodinma became Senator for Imo West on 6 June 2011 and was re-elected in 2015.

He served as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation and worked on laws related to aviation, marine transport, land transport, budgets, and the environment.

In 2018, he left the PDP and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) to run for governor.

Governor of Imo State

In the March 2019 Imo State gubernatorial election, Uzodinma initially came fourth with 96,458 votes, while Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP was declared the winner with 273,404 votes.

Uzodinma challenged the results, and on 14 January 2020, the Supreme Court declared him the duly elected governor, ruling that votes from 388 polling units had been wrongly excluded.

He and Deputy Governor Placid Njoku were sworn in on 15 January 2020.

Upon assuming office, Uzodinma ordered a comprehensive audit of state finances from May 2010 to January 2020 and a review of all ongoing contracts. His administration has implemented several key projects, including:

  • Rehabilitated 305 health centres
  • Built over 90 roads
  • Recovered K. O. Mbadiwe University as state property
  • Supplied water to rural areas through boreholes
  • Started the “Search and Flush” security operation with over 100 security pickup vans

On 31 May 2023, he became chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, replacing Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, with Uba Sani as vice chairman. Ahead of the 2023 Imo State governorship election, he selected Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru as his running mate on 13 August 2023.

Uzodinma’s first marriage to Augusta Uzodinma in 1993 produced five children but ended in 2010 due to irreconcilable differences.

In 2015, he married Chioma Ikeaka Uzodinma, a law graduate of Imo State University. Their marriage has produced four children.

Chioma, 31 years younger than Uzodinma, has been active in philanthropy, supporting women, children, and vulnerable groups in Imo State.

Controversies

Uzodinma has faced criticism. In 2018, he was allegedly arrested over a failed US$12 million dredging contract, which he denied.

In 2021, he borrowed ₦16.4 billion, increasing state debt, which drew criticism for not prioritising pensions and salaries.

And in 2022, former governor Rochas Okorocha accused him of destroying previous projects. His government has also dealt with security challenges in Orlu and other areas.
