Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has predicted an easy victory for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the statement while discussing the opposition’s preparations for the election. He said parties seeking to defeat Tinubu had not built the political structure needed to challenge the president.
Wike said Tinubu faced a difficult contest in the 2023 presidential election but expects the 2027 race to be easier for the president.
“2023 was a tough election for him. But 2027 will be different.”
He said an opposition group would need years of planning and organisation to defeat a sitting government.
“To remove a government, you need a strong, vibrant opposition that has spent over four years planning.”
Wike also criticised opposition politicians who rely on party movements and alliances without building a strong political base.
He said governorship elections often depend on state-level politics, while presidential elections require a wider national campaign.
“Governorship elections rely on local variables, but a national election is a completely different ballgame.”
Wike then dismissed the opposition’s chances against Tinubu in 2027.
“If it is this 2027 election against Bola Ahmed Tinubu, forget it. It’s over.”
The FCT minister also rejected claims that the Tinubu administration uses federal power to influence election results. He said the government should receive credit when electoral processes run without interference.
“From what I have seen, this government allows processes to run their own way, and they must be given credit for that.”
Wike cited the 2019 Rivers State election when discussing federal intervention in elections. He recalled the deployment of soldiers across the state during that election.
“In Rivers State, in 2019, we saw what is called federal might. We saw soldiers taking over everywhere.”
He also questioned whether similar action took place during recent elections under the Tinubu administration.
