The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has denied claims that he endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.
The claim circulated on social media, prompting the Sultan’s media team to issue a statement signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka.
“Our simple response to the report is that it is not possible for the Sultan, as the father of all, to make such a statement, either publicly or in any other forum,” Adefaka said.
The statement said politicians can visit the Sultan for counsel, prayers and blessings without receiving his political endorsement.
“The institutions of monarchy and religion led by the Sultan are institutions of a father figure,” it said.
Adefaka added that the Sultan receives politicians “regardless of political affiliation or persuasion”.
The media team urged Nigerians to reject reports linking the Sultan to Tinubu’s 2027 campaign or the candidacy of any other politician.
It also asked journalists and social media users to check political claims before sharing them, particularly reports involving traditional and religious leaders.
The statement said the Sultan would continue to promote peace, unity, stability and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
