The 2027 presidential race is taking shape around three major opposition and governing camps as Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi prepare for separate bids.
Tinubu is seeking re-election on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, Atiku is running under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Obi is contesting with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
With the presidential campaign period approaching, the three camps are also deciding who will coordinate their operations across the country.
Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign Team
The APC is considering Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura for Tinubu’s campaign Director-General position, according to The PUNCH.
Uzodimma chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, while Al-Makura has remained part of the APC’s senior political network since the party’s formation.
Party sources told The PUNCH that the choice will depend on political experience, organisational ability, regional acceptance and religious considerations.
Uzodimma currently has support from some APC stakeholders, although the party has not made a final appointment.
A presidency source told The PUNCH: “At the moment, it is still unclear who will eventually lead the campaign organisation. However, Governor Hope Uzodimma is the person being tipped by party stakeholders to head the APC’s presidential campaign team. That could still change before a final decision is made.”
The eventual campaign council is expected to include governors, ministers, lawmakers, former governors and other APC leaders.
Atiku’s 2027 Campaign Team
Atiku’s ADC campaign has Aminu Tambuwal as the leading contender for the Director-General position.
Tambuwal managed Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign under the Peoples Democratic Party and previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and governor of Sokoto State.
After leaving the PDP, Tambuwal joined the ADC in March 2026 and later said he would not seek another Senate term.
An ADC source familiar with the discussions gave The PUNCH a brief answer when asked who was being considered for the role:
“Tambuwal.”
The party had not formally announced the appointment when The PUNCH published its report. ADC chieftain Timothy Osadolor said party leaders were due to meet over the campaign structure.
Atiku’s running mate, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, is also expected to work with Tambuwal on the campaign.
Peter Obi’s 2027 Campaign Team
Peter Obi will contest the 2027 presidency under the NDC after serving as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023.
The NDC was still finalising its campaign organisation when The PUNCH spoke with political party officials. The report did not name a campaign Director-General for Obi.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, said the campaign structure was being prepared and that the Director-General had already been selected but had not yet been unveiled.
“There is a DG in place, although it has not been unveiled officially.”
Asogwa said the Labour Party would build its campaign around the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, with the unions expected to provide party-agent support at polling units.
That arrangement would give the Labour Party a different campaign model from the APC and ADC structures described in the report.
Who Could Lead Tinubu’s Campaign?
Uzodimma and Al-Makura are the two names currently linked to Tinubu’s campaign DG position.
Uzodimma brings his role as chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, while Al-Makura brings his experience as a former governor and senior APC figure.
The APC had not announced its final choice at the time of The PUNCH report.
Who Could Lead Atiku’s Campaign?
Tambuwal is the leading name linked to Atiku’s campaign DG position.
His previous work on Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign gives him experience with the former vice-president’s campaign organisation.
The ADC, however, still had to complete its internal consultations before making the appointment official.
Who Is Organising Peter Obi’s Campaign?
Obi’s presidential bid is being organised under the NDC, while the party works on its wider campaign council.
The party has not publicly identified the Director-General in the report, although Asogwa said the position had already been filled.
The campaign will therefore move towards the August 19 presidential campaign start with the party still completing its wider organisation.

The three camps are therefore at different stages of building their presidential organisations. The APC is weighing two candidates for Tinubu’s campaign DG role, the ADC is considering Tambuwal for Atiku, while Obi’s NDC says it has already selected a DG without naming the person.
2027 Presidential Campaign Timeline
INEC released its 2027 election timetable in February and set February 20, 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
The Commission’s current website also lists January 16, 2027 as the presidential and National Assembly election date, showing that the election timetable has since been revised.
INEC’s revised timetable followed changes to the electoral framework and subsequent adjustments to the 2027 election schedule.
The campaign timetable remains a key deadline for the parties as they finalise their campaign councils and nationwide operations.
For Tinubu, the immediate question is whether Uzodimma or Al-Makura will take charge of the APC campaign.
For Atiku, attention is on whether the ADC will formally appoint Tambuwal.
And as for Obi, the NDC has confirmed that a campaign DG is in place but has yet to name the person in the report.
Those decisions will determine the senior figures placed at the centre of the three presidential campaigns as the 2027 election approaches.
