INEC NIN verification will become part of Nigeria’s voter registration process as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) moves to stop duplicate voter registration ahead of future elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the plan on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and members of her management team at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan said the move follows the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, and builds on cooperation between both agencies.
He said INEC will work with NIMC to verify voter identities, improve voter registration and detect duplicate records.
“The Commission sees enormous opportunities for collaboration with NIMC, particularly in voter registration, data verification and the elimination of duplicate voter records,” Amupitan said.
Online CVR Already Requires NIN
Meanwhile, Amupitan said the plan fits into INEC’s online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform, which already requires applicants to provide their NIN for identity verification.
He said closer cooperation with NIMC will allow the commission to check voter information more effectively during registration.
The meeting centred on expanding cooperation between both agencies on identity verification and voter registration.
